In places the grey glaze has run down the outside in long natural drips, ending just above the foot. Inside, the grey glaze pools across the well and is scattered with dark brown iron spots, some small and some bold, like rain on stone. Throughout, fine specks from the clay show through the glaze, and throwing ridges give the surface a gentle rhythm.

The katakuchi (片口, "one-sided mouth") form takes its name from the single pouring lip pulled from the rim. Originally a utilitarian vessel for pouring sake, soy sauce or oil, it has become a popular matcha bowl: you can whisk tea in it and pour it neatly into cups, which makes it ideal for sharing matcha or for preparing iced matcha and lattes.

The body is deep and rounded with a slightly inturned rim, set on a low, trimmed foot. The foot is left unglazed, revealing warm reddish-brown clay, and a small impressed potter's mark sits inside the foot ring.

Details:

• Origin: Japan; kiln/artist unconfirmed

• Form: Katakuchi (spouted) matcha bowl, deep rounded body, single pouring lip

• Glaze: Amber-brown glaze with grey-white rim band and natural drips; grey interior with iron spots

• Foot: Unglazed reddish-brown clay, impressed potter's mark

• Condition: Good secondhand condition — please see photos for any marks

• Dimensions: (Diam.) approx. 11.5cm (excluding spout) x (H) approx. 6.8cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1014/6037/7984/files/B4A90A6D-E2D0-4D20-9FD7-A900BE3569A6.jpg?v=1790878512
https://tsuchi-ceramic.com/products/katakuchi-matcha-bowl-amber-glaze-grey-drips-iron-spots-pouring-lip
