In Korean Ido bowls and the Hagi and Karatsu traditions, kairagi was valued mainly as a chance effect around the foot

The form is low and wide, with walls pushed and dented by hand and a softly undulating rim, so each side offers a different profile in the hand. Inside, the glaze settles more evenly toward the well (chadamari). The tall foot is knife-trimmed and left unglazed, revealing a sandy buff clay with a spiral whorl at the centre and warm orange flashing from the kiln.

Details:

• Origin: Hagi ware (Yamaguchi, Japan), Oni-Hagi style per box inscription; artist unconfirmed

• Form: Wide, low tea bowl with hand-dented walls and undulating rim

• Glaze: White kairagi crawl glaze over dark iron slip, inside and out

• Foot: Unglazed, knife-trimmed, spiral whorl, buff sandy clay with orange flashing

• Box: Paper box with gold and silver leaf flecks, red seal and brushed inscription

• Condition: Good secondhand condition; box shows wear and tape repairs — please see photos for any marks or glaze irregularities

• Dimensions: (Diam.) approx. 13cm x (H) approx. 7.5cm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1014/6037/7984/files/AB2139E5-9550-4D1C-8310-74A78D8D43D1.jpg?v=1790878512
