Shigaraki is one of Japan's Six Old Kilns (\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eRokkoyō\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e), whose pottery tradition dates back to the medieval period. The bowl shows the region's best-known trait: coarse clay packed with white feldspar and stone grains, which burst through the surface during firing. This effect, called \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eishihaze\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e (stone eruption), is valued in Shigaraki ware for its rugged, natural character. Here the potter has used a dark, iron-rich clay, so the white grains stand out vividly, like scattered stars. A thin, glossy brown glaze covers the exterior and shows off pronounced throwing rings (\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003erokuro-me\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e) spiralling down towards the foot. Where the glaze pools in the grooves and near the base, it breaks into pale olive-cream highlights.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe interior is decorated with \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ehakeme\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e (brush-mark), a technique in which white slip is brushed on while the bowl turns on the wheel. The technique originated in Korean buncheong ware and was later adopted across Japanese kilns.
