Bizen Ware Stoneware Mug — Unglazed Wood-Fired Body, Natural Ash Flashing

This mug is Bizen ware (備前焼), one of Japan's oldest and most distinctive ceramic traditions, dating back over a thousand years to kilns in Okayama Prefecture. Bizen ware is fired unglazed at high temperature in a wood-burning kiln, often for a week or more, so all of its color and surface variation comes purely from the interaction of clay, flame, and natural ash rather than any applied glaze. This mug shows that signature range of tones — deep reddish-brown where the flame licked directly across the surface, paler buff patches where straw or ash rested against the clay during firing (a hidasuki-adjacent effect), and visible fine speckling from ash particles fused into the body. The form is hand-thrown with a sturdy pulled handle, a gently waisted profile, and a banded, ridged section near the base typical of Bizen's rustic, unadorned aesthetic. The unglazed stoneware body is dense and rough to the touch, characteristic of Bizen's high-iron clay.
