Hagi Ware Kumidashi Teacups, Set of 5 — Gohon Spots, Cut Foot, Signed Wooden Box
Hagi Ware Kumidashi Teacups, Set of 5 — Gohon Spots, Cut Foot, Signed Wooden Box
Five Hagi ware (Hagi-yaki) cups in their original wooden box, inscribed 萩焼 汲出揃 ("Hagi ware, matched set of kumidashi"). Kumidashi are guest cups for serving tea or hot water before a tea ceremony, and are lovely for everyday green tea.
A soft grey-white glaze covers a sandy red-brown clay, blushing apricot and rose where iron comes through in the firing. The round orange spots (gohon-de) are among Hagi's most prized effects. Hagi clay is porous, so tea slowly seeps into the fine crackle and the colours deepen with use, known as "Hagi no nanabake" (the seven transformations of Hagi).
Deep rounded form with a gently flared rim and a tall unglazed foot. Several feet have a deliberate notch (wari-kōdai), a traditional Hagi feature, not damage.
