Hagi-yaki Rice Bowls, Pair — Kohiki-Style Rice Straw Ash Spots
Hagi ware is one of Japan's most beloved tea-ceremony ceramics, prized for its soft, porous glaze that's said to change character with use over time ("Hagi no nanabake" — the seven transformations of Hagi). This pair shows a warm milky-white glaze over a pale grey stoneware body, marked with distinctive circular orange-brown ash spots — a natural effect from rice husk ash settling on the surface during firing. The unglazed foot ring reveals the warm clay body beneath, with an impressed maker's mark at the base.
