Maori White Glazed Stoneware Mug — Looped Handle, Stamped Maker's Mark, Iron-Spot Accents
This single stacking-style mug is thrown in a soft, rounded form with a distinctive stepped shoulder — the body narrows partway down into a slightly flared foot, a shape often used so mugs nest neatly for stacking or storage. A thick, glossy white glaze covers the piece, breaking to reveal small rust-brown iron spots pooling near the base where the glaze runs thinnest.
The loop handle is pulled and attached by hand, slightly asymmetrical, giving the piece a warm, handmade character rather than a factory-uniform one. On the underside, a circular stamped mark reading "MAORI" identifies the maker or workshop/brand, alongside visible throwing rings on the unglazed footring.
