Oni-Hagi Chawan, Hand-Formed — White Crawl Glaze, Paper Box
Oni-Hagi ("demon Hagi") is the boldest branch of Hagi ware, using a coarse clay that causes the thick white glaze to shrink and bead dramatically across the surface. The effect is known as kairagi (梅花皮), named after the pebbled ray skin once used on sword grips. In Korean Ido bowls and the Hagi and Karatsu traditions, kairagi was valued mainly as a chance effect around the foot
The form is low and wide, with walls pushed and dented by hand and a softly undulating rim, so each side offers a different profile in the hand. Inside, the glaze settles more evenly toward the well (chadamari). The tall foot is knife-trimmed and left unglazed, revealing a sandy buff clay with a spiral whorl at the centre and warm orange flashing from the kiln.
