Seto-yaki by Yoshiki Sugiura Matcha Chawan — Black Glaze with Cut-Out Cherry Blossom Petals, Split Foot, Signed & Boxed
A striking Seto-yaki matcha chawan by the artist Yoshiki Sugiura, finished in a deep, glossy black glaze with a fine textured surface. Scattered cherry blossom petal shapes are cut through the glaze to reveal the pale unglazed clay beneath, creating a bold graphic contrast against the black ground. The bowl sits on an unusual split (cloven) foot in unglazed stoneware, and the underside carries the artist’s brushed calligraphy signature. Comes in its original fitted presentation box with red-and-black patterned paper.
Seto is one of Japan’s oldest and most prolific ceramic centers, historically producing a huge range of glaze styles — this piece’s rich black glaze recalls the tradition’s tenmoku-style work, given a modern graphic treatment through the cut petal motif.
