This hand-thrown matcha bowl (chawan) is Shigaraki ware, made in Shiga Prefecture. Shigaraki is one of Japan's Six Old Kilns (Rokkoyō), whose pottery tradition dates back to the medieval period. The bowl shows the region's best-known trait: coarse clay packed with white feldspar and stone grains, which burst through the surface during firing. This effect, called ishihaze (stone eruption), is valued in Shigaraki ware for its rugged, natural character. Here the potter has used a dark, iron-rich clay, so the white grains stand out vividly, like scattered stars. A thin, glossy brown glaze covers the exterior and shows off pronounced throwing rings (rokuro-me) spiralling down towards the foot. Where the glaze pools in the grooves and near the base, it breaks into pale olive-cream highlights.

The interior is decorated with hakeme (brush-mark), a technique in which white slip is brushed on while the bowl turns on the wheel. The technique originated in Korean buncheong ware and was later adopted across Japanese kilns. Here the slip forms a continuous spiral that draws the eye down into the well of the bowl (chadamari), where a translucent glaze pools into a soft celadon-green with fine crackle.
